Go ahead, poop on that carpet!

Where is my sweet Molly and who is this fussy impostor?! She still sleeps pretty well at night -- for 3 or 4 hours at a stretch -- but it's a restless sleep full of grunting, squirming, and squealing. I keep getting up thinking she needs to be held, changed, or fed, only to find out she needs none of the 3. Maybe it's gas? Who knows...I may put a call in to the pediatrician though just to get a little advice. I feel like such a rookie!!

The low point was definitely yesterday when I was changing her diaper and she decided to poop all over me, the changing table, and her lovely purple Pottery Barn carpet. Nice. Luckily my mom was there to help instruct me on how to get green stains out of a lavender rug. How do moms know all these things?? And when will I know them too?

Here are some new pics from Molly's 3rd week:

Roll over, roll over!

Check out Molly's latest trick:
I think she's a strong one! That 5 minutes of tummy time is probably the highlight of my day every day. Oh the joys of parenthood!

Center of attention

Well, we know one thing for sure -- this child is definitely loved! With 2 sets of grandparents around and 2 proud aunts, it can be hard for Jason and I to even get in our own Molly time. Just kidding :) From 10pm to 8am, we have unlimited access to her cuteness. And mood swings.

Anyway, Molly has had a fantastic second week at home. She's a champion eater and a pretty good sleeper too. She clocked in almost 6 hours in a row last night after a busy day of hanging out with Grandma and Grandpa O'Grady. And we found out this morning at Molly's 2-week appointment that she is up to 8 lbs 2 oz and 20 inches. Hello growth spurt! She's in the 50th percentile for weight, length, and head circumference...absolutely perfect. At least her mama thinks so!

Home alone

Jason is officially back at work today, so it's just me and my girl! She's taking a little nap, so I'm taking advantage of the free time to post a few pics from our first week with Molly at home. Just click the photo to view the album and all of the Molly cuteness :)

Some Molly pics

I'll take more today after we give Molly her first sponge bath and get her all clean and pretty!

What a difference a day makes!

We're on night #2 at home with Molly and I can't even tell you how much better the second day/night has been than the first :)

Jason and I were total rookies the first night she was home. We couldn't seem to swaddle her, dress her, comfort her, feed her, or even figure out where to put her to sleep. Ha! Our grand plan of having her sleep in the Pack N Play in our room was abandoned in favor of having her sleep in her crib and alternating who sleeps on the couch in her room to be in charge of feedings and diaper changes and who gets a few hours of quality sleep in our bed alone.

After an incredibly long, rough first night, we managed to make it to our 9am pediatrician's appointment this morning with no problem. Go figure! And since then, we've actually established a little routine that seems to be working...we'll see how long this lasts :)

Jason has been a super dad so far. But what did I expect? He loves his little girl and happily took on most of the responsibility this past morning/early afternoon when I was trying to fight through a killer migraine. I've never had to deal with intense headaches before, and have discovered there is almost nothing worse. But my mom did a little research and it looks like headaches can be a side effect of an epidural or spinal tap and should go away in a few days. Let's hope so!

Everyone seems to want to know how the whole breastfeeding thing is going, so here's a summary. It hasn't been easy, but like everything else, it seems to be getting a little better. We were off to a rough start from the get-go with Molly in the NICU and on an IV. I wasn't really able to breastfeed her at first and just had to bond with the pump for 20 min every 3 hours. Once they started weaning her off the IV, I started attempting to nurse -- sometimes it would work out okay and other times not so much. So, we did have to start giving her formula to get her blood sugar up and get her off all the wires. When she went under the lights for jaundice, we had another set back because they only wanted us to take her out every other feeding. I was worried we were going to lose ground, but she still remembered what to do. But then we got home, and without the help of the NICU nurses and lactation specialists, I started to have trouble getting my angry girl to latch on. So, back to the pump I went! I know bottles are supposed to be a no-no in the first 2 weeks while you're trying to establish good breastfeeding habits, but with no sleep and a migraine, I just had to take a little break. Once I started feeling better late afternoon/early evening, I picked up with the breastfeeding again, and to my total surprise and complete joy, it's been going really well. I'm still pumping and giving her bottles after a feeding if she seems like she needs it. But we've made tremendous progress and I am feeling pretty darn good about how it's going!

Enough about that...you guys probably want pictures, not prose! Unfortunately, the cord to download pics from my camera to the laptop is in our bedroom where Jason is sound asleep, so I will have to wait to post an album of Molly photos. Until then, here's one I snapped with my phone:
Molly has to have her hands free -- we learned this the hard way

Molly -- day 3

We're on our third day as parents of sweet Miss Molly and every day gets better than the last. She finally got her IV out today (Molly was born under a little bit of distress) and has started eating like a champ. Now we just need that funky yellow jaundice color to go away...

Here are some new pics:

Jason and I are both doing a little better today as well. We were able to sleep for a good chunk of time last night (4 hours for me and 6 for Jas) and are getting used to Molly's little routine. Two more days at Northwestern and then we have to brave it alone at our place. Oh what will we do without the help of all these wonderful nurses?? I think it's time for the grandparents to come in town!

Donde esta el bano?

Excuse the lack of accent marks in the above question -- I don't have a Spanish keyboard!

Anyway, people always talk about how the last few weeks of pregnancy are miserable, but I haven't really felt that bad...until now. I won't list out my ailments, but let's just say I feel like this child is squashing all of my internal organs.

6 days to go!! Wish me luck :)

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The RoadThe Road by Cormac McCarthy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Tough book to get through, but somehow, I ended up liking it. McCarthy offers up a VERY bleak view of the end of the world -- worse than anything I could ever come up with in my head -- yet he manages to give readers just enough hope to keep going. And I really do mean just enough. There were times I thought about abandoning this book, but then the boy would smile or the man would find a can of food, and I would decide to read a few more pages. This isn't "beach reading," but definitely worth it.

Breakfast at Wimbledon

Congratulations Rafa! Although it was strange, and slightly unsettling, to watch a Wimbledon final that did not include Roger Federer, I was extremely happy to see Rafael Nadal cruise to victory vs Tomas Berdych.

The match was a short one, just 3 sets, so there was plenty of time for player interviews and commentary after the finish. My favorite moment was when John McEnroe asked Rafa why he always bites the trophy, obviously hoping to hear a story about luck or tradition, and a slightly confused Rafael Nadal explained that he did it once in Monte Carlo and now the photographers always ask him to do it. Ha!

The tricky thing now will be deciding who to cheer for at the US Open. Rafa has never won, so I would love to see him do it. But then I feel like it could be Andy Roddick's last chance at glory. I also worry that Roger is nearing the end of his career, so I'd like to see him win a few more before he retires... Too many players to love! What's a tennis fan to do?
