It's draft day today and Jason and I are so excited we can hardly stand it. The EHL (Ed Hochuli League) draft with Jason's brothers starts at 4:00 and the OFL (Overbey Football League) draft with my family starts at 7:00. Busy day!
I won't know what pick number I have in the EHL until 30 minutes before the draft, but am keeping my fingers crossed that I end up in the top 6. I got screwed in the OFL and will be choosing last :(
Anyway, I am testing out a new draft strategy this year. I feel a little nervous about it, but hopefully it will work out for me. Although I won the OFL last year, I came in dead last in the EHL and have been getting clowned on by Jason's brothers ever since. I must redeem myself!!

The karate kid
Check me out! I finally finished my cuddle-up cardigan from the Sew Everything Workshop. Isn't it cute? My mom helped with the turquoise binding on the front edges, but I did everything else. I beam with pride...
I work in advertising. I should be better at this!
I've been futzing with the layout, fonts, and colors of the blog and can't seem to get it right. Something's off!! Advice?

The Chicago Skyline (we all hated that lady in blue, on the right. She stood the whole time! I cropped her out of the next photo though.)
Mom and Dad, it was fun times. You should come visit us more often! I took a tour of the Chicago Cultural Center (the old public library) and it was pretty cool. It's on the list for your next trip. Thanksgiving perhaps!

The Overbeys Take Chicago, Part 1: The Food
When my P's come to visit us in Chicago, we feast. This trip, we decided to try a fairly new restaurant that's getting a lot of buzz -- Graham Elliot -- and also visit an old favorite from my parents' days at Northwestern -- Gulliver's.
Graham Elliot
I first heard about Graham Elliot a few months ago when Dana and Natalie came into town. We popped in for a drink and ended up staying for 3. The vibe was definitely cool -- exposed brick walls, old school Chili Peppers playing at the bar -- but then I took a look at the menu and realized we were in a fine dining establishment. Interesting!
The plot thickened when Graham Elliot (the chef) showed up on Top Chef Masters a few weeks later. He didn't win, but came in second, and his food looked amazing. And he's kind of got this nerdy punk-rock nice-guy personality that I just fell in love with. And then we saw him at Lollapalooza. I mean literally, saw him! The restaurant was serving food at the festival and we spotted Graham at one point, catching some shade off to the side in his chef's jacket. Jason of course popped over and struck up a conversation with him and it fueled our desire to dine at his establishment.
Anyway, on to the food! We showed up on Saturday for a 7:30 reservation and were ushered over to a semi-private table in the back corner. Perfect! We all decided to get the tasting menu and I am so happy that we did. Every dish had its own interesting presentation and unique combination of flavors and it was fun to discuss what we liked for each course. Kind of like the judges' table on Top Chef :)
My favorite dish was the second course -- a corn chowder with real corn nuts, chipotle sauce, lime-flavored creme fraiche, and a garlic infused marshmallow. Yum! They served the dish with all of the dry ingredients and sauces in the bowl and then poured the corn chowder on top. Even after mixing it up, you'd get a hit of lime in one bite, and then that spicy chipotle flavor in the next, making every spoonful a tasty delicious surprise.
The other highlight of the night was, oddly enough, the cole slaw that was served with the root beer BBQ bison entree. The root beer BBQ sauce got mixed reviews (I loved it!), but our entire table was obsessed with the cole slaw! I've never tasted cole slaw that was so good. I think it also helped that it was served in a tempura-battered onion ring. But nevertheless, that was some darn good cole slaw.
I think Jason and I will definitely be back to Graham Elliot. And next time, I may even try the famous pop rocks/foie gras "lollipop" that we were all too chicken to order :)
Gulliver's
Now on to Gulliver's. Back in the late '60s/early '70s while at Northwestern, my mom and dad discovered the best pizza joint in Chicago -- Gulliver's at 2727 W Howard. Both Susie and I continued the tradition while we were at Northwestern, but since moving to the city, we have not made the trek. What were we thinking???
Gulliver's pizza is unbelievable -- similar in style to Lou Malnati's, for those who are familiar with Chicago deep dish. And the restaurant itself is a wonder to behold. Imagine a place where every spare inch of ceiling and wall space is covered with an antique light fixture or painting (1860s-1920s). It's kind of creepy, kind of kitschy, and very awesome.
Although I always order sausage pizza in the pan, I should mention that Gulliver's serves Italian, American, and Mexican cuisine. My friend Laura was addicted to their burritos in college. And my friend Jon ordered the tri-colored tortellini with blackened chicken almost every Sunday. Check it out. You will not be disappointed!

Can they make it work?
Hmmm.... I'm not sure what to think about the premiere of Project Runway. The celebrity episode was just so-so. I LOVE Daniel, but he only had one cool dress. The rest of his 'collection' with the electric blue and the weird homemade bomb...not so much.
We'll see about the new batch. I am excited to see what they can do, but no one really wowed me in the first ep. I know I am not cheering for Mitchell -- he went to school with my old coworker Brian and used to drive him crazy with his constant chatter about his mother's devotion to her Thomas Kinkade collection. Lame!

PS. Thanks to Jon and Sarah for coming over to watch with us :) It is way more fun to watch P Runway when you can share your snarky comments with friends!

Lolla love
I think this is the 5th year Jason and I have been to Lollapalooza in Grant Park and the 3rd year we've been joined by Jason's brothers, Jake and Jon. I don't know how it's possible, but every year is more fun than the last! This year, most of the bands were just so-so and the weather sucked (it rained buckets on Friday and was almost a hundred degrees on Sat and Sun)...and we STILL ended up having the best time.
Check out my adorable brothers dancing in the rain:

And here's my husband with the sleeve of a free T-shirt on his head. It was THAT hot!
The best show of the weekend, by far, was Jane's Addiction on Sunday night. They rocked!

Replay by Ken Grimwood
What would you do if you could live the last 25 years of your life again? Sounds interesting, right? But what if you had to do it over and over again? I love fantasy novels, especially ones that deal with time travel (hence, my LOST addiction), but I really think anyone would love this book.
I thought it was kind of weird at first how often I thought about this book...until I read this review on Amazon.com:
I met someone at a party once, and the title came up in casual conversation. The reaction was like "lighting the blue touch paper"...the room IGNITED. This book is so loved, it's almost eerie.
Yesss! Looks like I'm not the only dork out there!

Hey Chicago, what do you say, the Cubs are gonna win today!

Another great thing about Chicago in the summer? Going to Wrigleyville on a beautiful day and watching a Cubs game! Keith and Diane were in town from Minneapolis, so it was the perfect excuse to pay too much for tickets and show off our stadium. We really lucked out with the weather -- blue skies with a cool breeze going -- and the Cubs managed to win so we got to sing "Go Cubs Go!" at the end, which is always a perk.

We're a half a game behind St. Louis right now, but hopefully we can take a couple from the Marlins this weekend and then beat up on the Reds (my old team) some more next week.
