Merry and warm

My post on Disney will have to wait until I copy some pictures from Jason. But for now ... Merry Christmas from Florida where it's 80 degrees and doesn't exactly feel like Christmas. We still managed to find some Christmas cheer though.
Posing by the tree after meeting Santa and one of his elves
Riding in Santa's sleigh. Ready for another latte Molly? (Just kidding, it's hot chocolate :))
It wouldn't be Christmas without Christmas PJs! A rare pic of all 3 cousins together and looking in the same direction
We had a fun morning opening gifts, and now we're back to normal Florida life. Pool, beach, tennis, eat, rest, repeat.

O'Griswolds on vacation

We're officially on our way to Disney World! It's day 2 of the drive and we have about 6 and half hours to go. I feel like we're almost there, even though this last part is as long as a drive to Cincinnati. Hopefully the worst is behind us.

Molly has been a trooper so far. We left after work on Friday, so even though we had to fight through Chicago rush hour traffic, the first half of the drive was at night and Molly slept through almost all of it in a sleeping bag on the floor of the car. I know it's not exactly safe, but remember doing the same thing as a child. History repeats itself.

I drove the first 3 and a half hours yesterday, getting us to Lafayette, Indiana. Jason got us past Nashville, listening to Serial podcasts to stay awake. We slept from about 2am to 8am and were back on the road shortly after 9. Molly did not do as well this morning, with the sun shining through the window on her face and she even got car sick right before lunch. Ew.

So now she's back on the floor and attempting to nap. I can see the Atlanta skyline in the rear view mirror and the open road before us. Disney or bust!!

Can you feel the love tonight?

Well, we're rethinking the whole surprise thing now. Holiday surprise #1 was dinner at a fancy restaurant (Italian Village ... not actually as fancy as we remembered) and tickets to The Lion King. Molly was pretty excited when she found out what we were doing. She loved dinner and the first half of the musical. But then when she didn't get a snack at intermission (lines were too long), she started pouting and practically ruined the night.

It didn't help that the show was long -- over 2 hours -- and she was already tired from the weekend. Jason and I also had high expectations for the night. WE were excited, so it just added to our disappointment when Molly started acting like a ... spoiled only child. She earned herself a lecture on the ride home, which ended in tears, and was still kind of out of sorts this morning during breakfast.

I think we're back on track now. We're enforcing a "no treats, no videos" rule until the drive to Florida. She seems to have snapped out of her bad mood and we've been doing a lot of talking about making people feel good, being grateful, and dealing with disappointment. Tough lessons for an only child who doesn't often have to share.

She's still a sweet girl ... and she's still probably going to get all of her Christmas gifts (I seriously thought about returning the Barbie camper van though!). But we're rethinking the whole Disney surprise. We're still planning to go, but think we're going to tell her about it ahead of time. I think it might be better for all of us if she has time to think about what's coming and knows that she has to act the right way to earn it!!

The night started out well
Being fancy at a fancy restaurant
Excited for the show
NOT happy that she didn't get a snack during intermission
Even though Molly spent the second act pouting, I still thoroughly enjoyed the show! The costumes were amazing and the dancing was wonderful. I highly recommend going ... just leave your sulky five-year-old at home!!

A season for surprises

The Christmas tree is up, we've been shopping, addressing envelopes, and listening to holiday music. You could say we're feeling pretty festive. Molly had a few very specific requests for gifts -- a Monster High doll and a Barbie camper van -- and I plan to deliver on those gifts. But she has no idea about 2 very exciting things we have planned for December.

First, we're taking her to see The Lion King musical downtown next weekend. Molly looooves The Lion King movie, she loves the music, and she's spent hours poring over the program her great-grandmother brought her after seeing it on Broadway. Jason and I bought Molly a new dress and tights and hope she will be as excited as we are to dress up and do something fancy downtown.

The second big surprise is that we're going to Disney World for a couple of days before Christmas. We've had this trip planned for so long, I don't know how we've kept it a secret. But we have, and I'm fully expecting her mind to be blown when she figures out what we're doing. I don't know if she'll recognize the hotel (it's the same place we stayed last time), or if she'll spot the Disney signage from the car, but I kind of hope we can get to the gates before she fully realizes where we are.

Two weeks to go ... let the countdown begin!

Full of thanks

I think Thanksgiving might be my favorite holiday. Bold claim? I love that it's all about family, friends, and food (and football), not about the stuff, though we did get each of the kids a new toy to keep them entertained :) I also love that we don't have to travel. We've hosted most of the last 7 or 8 Thanksgivings at our house, and last year, only had to go one mile over to B's.

We had another excellent Thanksgiving this year. We we lucky to have both Jason's parents and my parents in town. Betsy, Archie, James, and George came over as well. We had a pretty full house, but still missed everyone else who couldn't be there to celebrate with us.

Betsy, Archie, and I started out the day with the Evanston Flying Turkey 5k. It was a pretty nice day for a run -- in the low 50s with just a teeny tiny bit of rain. I think we earned our Thanksgiving dinner! And then we spent the rest of the day cooking, eating, and hanging out with everyone. It was a good day from start to finish.

Two turkeys about to run the Evanston Flying Turkey
Kids table
Post Thanksgiving snuggles
Winding down with Magna Tiles
Pre-Thanksgiving -- watching Paw Patrol with Grandpa
Happy Thanksgiving!! Next up ... my other favorite holiday! Time to turn on the Christmas carols and get shopping :)

Mini me?

Molly used to be the spitting image of Jason, but I think she is looking more like me every day!

Obviously, I wasn't quite as picky about my clothes ...

Also, as an update to an earlier post, it seems Molly has started to turn things around at school. She said her teacher whispered to her in a quiet voice the other day that she was doing really well with her listening. That's what I like to hear!

An interview with my daughter

Answers to 15 questions (because she lost interest before I could get to 20).

What is your favorite...

  • Color? Pink (still holding strong with pink ...)
  • Song? Shut Up + Dance - Walk the Moon (we like to sing this at top volume in the car, it takes me back to the 80s)
  • TV show? Star Wars Rebels (a cartoon set in the years between Episodes III and IV)
  • Movie? Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
  • Thing to do? Play at the park
  • Sport? Swimming (she's definitely more comfortable in the water now)
  • Book? Lucky Duck (recently checked out with her very own library card)
  • Toy? Good old Barbie (I must admit, I do like the latest Barbie commercial)
  • Friend? Larry (a friend from soccer who is also in her Kindergarten class and the before and after care program)
  • Food? Mac and cheese (stock answer)
  • Dessert? Popsicles
  • Restaurant? Trattoria D.O.C.
  • Place to go? To a castle (good timing for a Disney trip!)
What do you wish you could do?
  • Learn to read (we're working on it!)
Final question ... what do you want for Christmas?
  • A Star Wars bike with lightsabers on it (Good luck with that one, Santa!)

School rules

We're a couple of months in now and things are still going pretty well at school, but we have hit a few bumps. Interestingly enough, I think Molly prefers the before and after care program to Kindergarten ... probably because she can be her goofy self there without having to worry about so many rules.

Yes, my sweet child has had a little bit of trouble following the rules these last few days. She's been chatting with friends, not listening, and just being a little too social in general for her teacher's liking.

It's hard, as a parent, because I feel like I'm also getting in trouble whenever the teacher pulls me aside or calls me about a problem at school. I also feel bad for Molly, because I know she's starting to feel like she's always making mistakes. She's been really good about turning things around whenever I have to talk to her about something. But then something new will pop up that the teacher doesn't like. There seems to be a lot of stuff that the teacher doesn't like ... but I have to save my frustration for the blog and just try to help the Molls be a better listener :)

I don't want to be one of those parents who can't accept that her child isn't a perfect angel. Molly doesn't always listen to me, so why would I think she'd always listen at school? But I also don't really think I need to receive a call at work because Molly pretended to lick a friend on the arm. Ha! Jason and I decided that one wasn't worth talking to her about, but then it backfired when he tried to make light of it by asking if she was acting like a puppy in class. She acted like she didn't know what he was talking about and then totally broke down crying. Stressed much?

She still likes school (for now) and is having a blast at after care. She's even picked up an admirer. We ran into one of the first grade boys from after care over the weekend and he completely spazzed out when he saw Molly. His mom looked at Jason and whispered, "Crush. He doesn't know how to act around her." Adorable.

It's early, we're still figuring this all out. I can't get too worried about it yet. Hopefully Molly can keep up her enthusiasm for school while also learning how to follow all the rules.

May the force be with you

A belated "Happy Halloween" from my 2 favorite Star Wars fans:
Storm Trooper and Chewie
And because the Kindergarteners were not allowed to wear masks to school (too many collisions in Halloweens past ...), Molly was also a witch for her very first Halloween parade:
I also wore this hat to hand out candy when Molly was running around as Chewbacca
She wants us to come to her school events and then shuns us when we're there! Ha!
A few of Molly's friends and their parents came over to our house after trick or treating and it ended up being a pretty fun night. I'm glad Molly's making new friends at her school and that we are too. Happy Halloween!

New old job

Someone told me once that it usually takes about 6 months to know if a job is a good fit or not. I've had my current job for about 8 months now and really couldn't be happier. Instead of constantly thinking about an escape plan, as I did with my last job, I'm now thinking about how long I can make it last. So, when the opportunity came up to switch to a full-time position (I had been working as an hourly contractor), I decided to go for it.

I had my first official day on Monday -- an all-day orientation to learn about the company I've been at for almost a year :) -- and now it's back to business as usual. Nothing has really changed with my day-to-day job responsibilities. I have the word "manager" in my title now, even though I really only have to manage myself. I get a blue stripe on my badge and a red parking sticker. I now have to keep track of my vacation days for the year (the one negative thing about making the switch!), but now I get paid for those vacation days ... and holidays. It's worth it. And it's a big company, so there are a million different ways I can grow my career.

I know part of the reason I'm so happy with this job is that Molly is so happy at school. It's not hard for me to leave on time to pick her up (no end of day crises coming when you least expect it) and I can usually work at home if there's something happening at school, like the Halloween parade tomorrow (pictures to come :)). Just call me ...

Lovely Colorado Springs

We spent last weekend in my new favorite Colorado city -- Colorado Springs! The highlights of the weekend were celebrating Grandma Janet's 80th birthday, seeing Steve and Marsha's new house, and visiting the coolest zoo ever, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
Grandma Janet (center) with the guys -- Jeff, Keith, Jason, Jeremy, Jess, Steve, and Joe
And now with the girls (and Will) -- Back row: Terry, Lori, Janet, Marsha, Teresa (Steve and Jason to the side)
Front row: Madison, Will, and Molly
Two silly hippies -- artwork by Aunt Kathy
View from Steve and Marsha's -- Pike's Peak!
Will feeding the giraffes -- I did it too, but was totally scared
Will and Molly with Uncle Joe in the wind tunnel
Pretending to be pilots
It's so much fun to have a new place to visit and explore. I really love Steve and Marsha's new house. They have tons of room, an amazing view, a park down the street, and a network of paths and trails just a hop, skip, and a jump away. When can we go back?

Catching up

We've had a busy Fall so far ... family and friends in town, a successful Renegade Craft Fair for Repeater Printing and BC Print Media, a wedding and bachelorette party for one of my favorite art directors ... sometimes I feel like I'm 25 again, or living a double life. We've been out and about, having fun, enjoying Chicago, but also doing plenty of school and family stuff with Molly.

I mentioned to another parent at the playground that Jason was going to watch the Cubs game with some friends (go Cubs!) and she made a comment like, "Oh, once they turn 5, do you get your life back?" and it kind of surprised me. I guess we haven't had to give up too much (at least lately ... maybe she's right about the age 5 comment, ha!). Being a parent is a lot of work, so it's hard to carve out time for the other stuff. But I'm happy that we do. No more complaining that we are busy!

We had a fun dinner last night with friends while our girls watched a movie in the basement, tonight we're going to a school fundraiser, tomorrow Molly and I are going downtown to cheer Archie on in the marathon, then Jason goes to a concert, and I go out for a fun dinner with my sisters. Everybody wins!
Enjoying a night out ...
... with two of our favorite O'Gradys
Spending a beautiful day with beautiful friends

A cautionary tale

I feel like I've been through the wringer these last few days! I bought the car of my dreams, realized a few hours later that I overpaid for the car, spent 2 sleepless nights panicking and gathering details, and finally, with a lot of help and advice from family and friends, managed to re-negotiate the contract and get my intended price.

Whew! Want me to back up? I need to get this down and on the record so I can refer back to it next time I make a big purchase. I made quite a few mistakes, which I will outline as I go.

It all started the weekend Molly and I drove to Cincinnati. I realized I hated my car. The seats were uncomfortable, the steering was truck-like, and it was so loud on the highway that Molly couldn't hear through her headphones if I had the radio on at any volume. Since there was no way she was going to survive 6 hours in the car without the movie, I ended up making most of the drive in radio silence. I spent some of that time thinking about how nice it would be to drive something new(er).

I started doing some research and settled on the Nissan Murano for my next car. The reviews were pretty good, I liked the way it looked, and it seemed like it had some luxury touches without a luxury price tag.

Mistake #1: I fell in love with a car. I found a few 2014 Muranos for sale that looked good, including one in Evanston a couple of miles away. The one in Evanston was white, with tan leather, and only 12,000 miles. I wanted it. Bad. It had everything on my list and cargurus.com said it was priced under blue book value. I wasn't willing to walk off the lot and consider another car. I wanted that one.

Mistake #2: I went in for a test drive and ended up buying the car the same day. Mistake #3: I did all of this alone. Mistake #4: I was in a hurry, trying to get everything wrapped up in time to get Molly to a birthday party. It gets worse.

They said there was no wiggle room on the price of the car, but they offered me more for my trade-in than I was expecting. I did a teeny tiny bit of negotiating to end up at the number I wanted, and felt so proud of my skills. Mistake #5: Feeling like I got a deal.

The car was listed as certified with a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty. Misunderstanding #1: The car had the OPTION for certification. To have it certified was an extra cost that they added to the base price of the car before I went into financing. No one ever told me or showed me the price of that certification or else it was done in a way that I didn't even realize it was happening.

Misunderstanding #2: They also started telling me about the wonderful warranty, that I thought was included with the certification, and I did a lot of yeah, yeahing. Everything sounded great. Mistake #6: So great, I even knowingly added on an extra package to the warranty that got me free oil changes, interior, and windshield protection, etc. I knew I was being a sucker about that add-on, but didn't care. At the price I thought I was paying, the add-on didn't seem like a big deal. Mistake #7: I agreed to finance the car even though I could have paid cash.

They stuck me in a room to wait for 30 min before the financing meeting. I was getting antsy about the time, thinking about when I would need to be home at the absolute latest in order to shower, wrap the present, and walk Molly over the birthday party. When they finally got me in with the finance guy, I was so relieved to be in the final stages of the sale. He printed out about a million pages of paperwork and started chatting me up about his niece, how his father had a Murano, and loved it, etc. Mistake #8: I thought he seemed like a pretty nice guy.

Anyway, he began rattling off line items and things started happening fast. I knew from going through closings on our condo and house that these big purchases are always more expensive than you think they are going to be. After taxes, fees, and all that random stuff, I knew the final cost of the car was going to be more than the price we agreed to. Mistake #9: The numbers seemed higher than I had expected, and I started feeling uncomfortable, but when I asked for an explanation, I accepted the answer without really understanding the hocus pocus involved with the calculation. I thought finance charges were involved, but was planning on paying off the loan early, so didn't worry too much. Mistake #10: I never asked for the final out-the-door number/pay-off cost.

Misunderstanding #3: I had agreed to put money down on the car and the very last thing we did was run my card for the down payment. SOMEHOW, I thought that amount was being subtracted from the amount of money that I financed. In reality, that payment was in addition to the amount I financed through the bank. Can you see how all of this happened? Yes, I am stupid.

Anyway, I drove home in my new car, loving every minute of it. I took Molly to the birthday party, slipped out to watch a quarter of the Northwestern game with Jason, and then picked up Molly at the party and tucked her in for bed.

I was starting to get an uneasy feeling about how fast everything went down, so I decided to go through the paperwork. Then, the true horror was revealed. By the time I figured it all out, the dealership was closed for the night. It was also closed the next day. There was no way I was going to be able to do anything about Mistakes 1-10 until Monday. I wasn't even sure I COULD do anything to fix the mess I had gotten myself into.

I called my mom in a panic (she knows about these things), scanned in a couple of the documents, and emailed the guys at the dealership. I thought there was a slim chance that there was an error on the paperwork and that they had entered an incorrect number on the forms.

I could not sleep that night. I kept replaying everything in my head, trying to figure out how it all went so wrong. I was on a major, major shame spiral and basically spent the rest of the weekend sweating.

On Monday morning, Jason and I went to the dealership to ask questions and try to remedy the situation. Misunderstanding #4: The finance guys were in a Monday morning meeting until 10:30, so we talked to the sales guy, who "explained" the numbers to us (incorrectly). We left the dealership thinking it wasn't as bad as we had feared.

Something still didn't feel right, so when I got to work, I checked the paperwork again and still couldn't figure out the discrepancy between what the sales guy said and what I was seeing on the forms. I finally got the finance guy on the phone and made him go through every single line charge listed, or not listed, on the forms. That's when I realized how much they charged me for the certification and warranty. Apparently those are "front end" charges, so they weren't itemized on the forms, just buried in as an unexplained sum added to the base price of the car. Mistake #11: I should have had that conversation before I signed the forms.

He told me there was nothing I could do, other than opting out of the extra warranty and gap coverage that I had signed up for, bringing my costs down slightly, but still not down to what I thought I had paid. My brother-in-law Archie put me in touch with a friend of his who is an estate lawyer and I talked him through the whole story. He wasn't sure what we'd be able to do, but recommended that I at least mention to the sales guy that I was going to have a contract lawyer review everything for me. Best piece of advice ever. The sales guy seemed like he was starting to panic. He kept trying to pressure me to come in again to talk about it, but I told him I wouldn't meet until I had a lawyer look over the paperwork. The next thing I knew, I had a text from the dealership that the manager had agreed to re-do my contract.

Still, when I showed up after work, the manager gave me the same song and dance about only being able to take off the extra warranty and gap coverage because I had already paid taxes on the certification, etc. I told him I was willing to eat the cost of the taxes paid on the certification and he reluctantly agreed to re-do the contract as a cash deal without any of the extras. He also went back on the tax thing and said he could get me out of the deal without having to pay the original taxes. Liar!!

I ended up with the price I wanted, but without the certification and warranty that I thought was included. I can live with that. I still have some of the original warranty on the car and probably should have to suffer a little bit for botching the first round of contracts!

I know I am a very lucky girl that I was able to get out of the first deal. What if I wouldn't have looked at the paperwork that first night after I bought the car? What if I didn't have a mom and lawyer friends who know a lot about these types of things? There's a reason car salesmen have a reputation for being sneaky. Lesson learned... Apparently I am a terrible negotiator, but no so bad at problem solving ;) Hopefully I won't have to buy a car again for at least 10 years!!
My new ride...it looks nice in the driveway, right? I DO love it, even after all this hassle.

Cincy

For once, we had a wide open weekend, so Molly and I decided to drive down to Cincinnati for a couple of days and see some friends. It was a short weekend, but super super sweet.
My Cincinnati girls -- Dana and Lauren
Getting served by our kids at the Children's Museum diner

With Molly's favorite dog of all time...Gus!
I really miss Cincinnati sometimes. It still feels like home to me, even though I'm almost getting to the point where I've lived in Chicago/Evanston for as long as I lived in Cincinnati. But I'm happy I still have good friends and family there and can get back to visit once or twice a year. Go Bengals! :)

Relief

Molly is having such a good first week at school and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I've been so worried about the change in routine -- mine and hers. I was afraid she wouldn't like the after school program or that she'd be bummed we weren't there to pick her up at 3:30 with the other parents.

But all of that worry was for nothing! She's fine. She's having the time of her life. She was doing the limbo in the gym after school today and didn't want to leave. She loves having so much access to the playground. And in a couple of weeks, she'll start tennis and gymnastics on Mondays and Wednesdays after school, which should keep things interesting. I wasn't going to sign her up for any extra programs, but a couple of her friends signed up, so why not?!

There was an ice cream social at the school playground this evening from 6 to 7, so I got to see Molly in her element, running around and mixing it up with her friends. The playground was so chaotic with kids from every grade crawling over every piece of equipment and Molly was right there in the middle of all of it, which shocked me. I'm so used to her hanging back and clinging to my leg whenever there are too many kids around...it warmed my heart to see her running around and having so much fun. As we were walking home, a kid stuck his head out of the window of a car and screamed, "bye Molly, see you tomorrow!" which also warmed my heart.

Some aspects of this whole Kindergarten thing are more difficult. Planning and packing lunch every morning has been kind of a pain. I feel like I'm going to have to be way more on top of our grocery shopping. And they kind of loaded us up with activities and meetings the past few weeks. Don't even get me started on the scheduled days off I've had to add to my calendar.

But the after school program covers a bunch of those days, and Jason and I are both able to work from home occasionally. I'm starting to build a network of mom friends who have offered to help out and have Molly over after school. I haven't taken anyone up on it yet, but it's nice to know I can.

It's early, but I'm feeling optimistic.

New stuff we like

Besides Kindergarten, of course, we're liking...
  • Family walks after dinner. It's good family time aaand gives me extra steps for my fitbit workweek hustle competition, which I am determined not to lose this week. I don't need to win...I just don't want to end up dead last (again)
  • Chapter books. Molly and I started reading The Junie B. Jones series in preparation for Kindergarten. Really, I'm just trying to get her ready for Harry Potter. Sooon!
  • Show Me a Hero. The new HBO miniseries about the housing struggle in Yonkers in the 80s...sounds riveting, right? It IS. Very, very good TV
  • Bloodline. Also really good TV. It's an intense family drama starring Kyle Chandler and set in the Florida Keys. I could not stop thinking about the final episode. I will be back for Season 2
  • New location at the Bucktown Arts Fest. I believe Jason and Jon will be in Booth 50 this year, which looks like it might be a high-traffic area right at the start of the path from the main street into the park. Repeater Printing and BC Print Media have a ton of new stuff to show. Check it out this weekend if you can!

First day of Kindergarten!

It's official, Molly's first day of elementary school is in the books....and she loved it!

The morning went pretty well. Jason and I both worked from home, so there was less pressure to hurry through our morning routine. We walked over early so Molly could meet the before school care teachers and get a little time in on the playground. She seemed happy and excited...all up until the last couple of minutes before she went inside.

It wasn't a terrible meltdown and a couple of the other kids even tried to make her feel better, which was sweet. One of the teachers ended up guiding her in and I heard from a parent who peeked through the window that she was smiling and laughing a few minutes later. Phew.

When we picked Molly up at the end of the day, she was smiling, bouncing, talking to the other kids, and SO happy to see us. She said she liked Kindergarten even better than preschool, so hopefully that means drop off will be less dramatic tomorrow :)

Here's the Kindergarten Kid:
Excited for school
Molly's first day. It's a little hard to read, but the sign says she's 5 and wants to be a nurse when she grows up. Awww
Molly's cubby
Right when Molly started crying that she had no one to play with, her friend Bianca showed up! I just wish they were in the same class...
Who would guess this kid was nervous and seconds away from a meltdown?

Great day at Great America

We made a semi-spur of the moment decision to go to Six Flags Great America last weekend. Northwestern was offering discounted tickets for alumni, so we decided to take advantage of the deal and seek some thrills.

It's kind of awesome to go to a theme park with a five-year-old. Molly can't go on any of the major coasters with the long lines, but there are tons of smaller rides and family friendly coasters that you can pretty much just walk up and ride. I think our longest wait was about 30 minutes for the Logger's Run, which was well worth it because it was about 90 degrees and we wanted to get soaked.

Some of my favorite memories from childhood were the trips my family took to Kings Island in Cincinnati. I think some of my favorite memories from being a parent are going to be trips like these to Great America and Disney World. I looove roller coasters and it turns out Molly does too. She will hold her arms in the air for the entire ride and scream around every turn. It's so cute. Only 14 more inches to grow until she can go on the really fun stuff like Batman and Vertical Velocity!
Carousel ride
We didn't go on the Yankee Clipper (line was too long) but had to take a photo since we were married at a hotel with the same name!
Red Baron
Around and around she goes
Enjoying everything Great America has to offer -- roller coasters, stuffed animals, cotton candy, and sugary drinks
